Global determinants of the development of the circular economy in the conditions of the systemic crisis of the world economy

Abstract

The dissertation is devoted to advancing the theoretical and methodological foundations of circular economy development under a systemic crisis of the world economy, substantiating scientific and methodological approaches to assessing countries’ circularity levels, and elaborating research-based practical recommendations aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of circular transformation in the context of global structural change.
In Chapter 1, “Theoretical Foundations of the Emergence and Formation of the Circular Economy under a Systemic Crisis of the World Economy,” the conceptual and categorical framework of circular economy research is further developed. The study systematizes scholarly approaches that interpret the circular economy as a reproduction model focused on retaining and restoring value embodied in resources, products, and materials through recurrent cycles. It also substantiates a shift in the functional role of circular instruments in crisis conditions from “environmentally desirable” options to economically necessary solutions for strengthening the resilience of production-consumption systems and value chains.
In Chapter 2, “Analytical Framework for Circular Economy Development under a Systemic Crisis of the World Economy,” the applied analytical base is deepened by combining a macro-level analysis of material and resource flows with a comparative assessment of waste management practices and a sectoral diagnosis of circular transformation instruments.
In Chapter 3, “Mechanisms of Circular Economy Development Effectiveness in Countries Worldwide in the Context of Global Change,” an applied toolkit is substantiated to explain and measure how circular economy mechanisms influence economic development and which managerial emphases should be differentiated across country groups.
