Structural-Semantic and Functional-Stylistic Characteristics of Poetonyms in the Novels of Ukrainian Writers of the Early 21st Century.

Abstract

The paper presents the analysis of the structural-semantic and functional-stylistic features of the poetonyms in the novels of Ukrainian writers of the early 21st century

First, the thesis considers theoretical and methodological background necessary for the poetonyms’ research, where the issue of the poetonymology metalanguage, the specific features of poetonyms and their functions in the text are uncovered. The paper also outlines the methodology of the poetonyms research in the modern Ukrainian authors’ novels, the concepts of the female prose and mass literature in modern literary criticism works.

In addition, the thesis highlights the anthropoetonyms significance in the modern Ukrainian female prose writers works, the structural and semantic peculiarities of personal names, the zoopoetonyms functioning in the texts.

Moreover, the research concentrates on the topopoetonyms stylistic features relevant for the text creation and the pragma- and ideopoetonyms functions on different levels of the text.

Proper names in the literary work serve to transmit the author’s artistic message and create the informational and stylistic content of the text helping create a vivid imaginative context. Personal names function as an important means of building the text visual system, as eventually the goal of the anthropoetonym in the literary work is to make for the understanding and adequate interpretation of the text. All the novels chosen for the analysis can be viewed as examples of the skillful anthropoetonyms use as the writers devote a lot of their attention to the proper name and its role in their literary works.

Apart from the above common elements, through which the anthropoetonyms relevance for the writers has been determined, each of the authors has their individual peculiarities of the anthropoetonyms use in their works. For instance, the author’s onomastic creativity is revealed in particular in zoopoetonyms. Appealing the reader’s general awareness, the writers tend to involve generally known phenomena from various spheres of life, transforming them into zoopoetonymic variants which correspond to zoopersons nature. It is noteworthy, that in the novels which traditionally describe the rural or urban life and whose task is to reflect the significance of human relationship, bigger attention is attached to the anthropoetonyms while zoopoetonyms merely shade the character’s proper name. However in the modern ironic novel, zoopoetonyms start playing a significant role functioning as an important layer within the bulk of proprietary units in the text; it must be noted that in this type of belles-lettres writing both zoopoetonyms and anthropoetonyms become the main component of the literary work vitopoetonimics.

Topopoetonyms in the novels under study are also actively used in the context, in such a way creating a unique associative background which in its turn creates the general emotional tinge for the ideological and semantic contents of the text. Considering topopoetonyms as the novel text-creating components which are aimed at transmitting the author’s message, it is possible to observe the ability of topopoetonyms to create a unique geography of the literary work. The topopoetonyms are characterised by their own pragmatic potential and acquire their own distinctive semantic function, having their own informative and semantic potential, i.e. they help reveal the author’s perception of the text characters, act as expressive key elements of the author’s artistic ideas in general, function as the important elements in the system of the text-creation means.

Pragma- and ideopoetonyms act in the novels in question as the representatives of the character’s material and spiritual lives mainly aimed at creating the historical period described, i.e. they serve as indicators for specific time intervals, help distinguish between the past and present life in the reader’s mind, convey the character’s negative attitude to the time period presented and at the same time certain nostalgia for their youth years, etc.

The unique rich poetonymic network created by the writers in their literary works can be explained by the authors’ linguistic intuition, their knowledge of the linguistic system. The ability of proprietary lexemes to function as an important means of individualising the novel can be accounted for the authors’ skillful and elaborate work with the poetonyms of various types and layers.
