The significant role of nominative units in the construction of the text, plot, composition, and the character system of the artistic text is unanimously recognised by domestic and foreign linguists.
The aim of the study is to develop the theoretical and methodological approach to the study of naming and namelessness as interrelated components of a literary text and the indicators of ideological and artistic concept, the analysis of which provides an understanding of the essence, author`s message and position.
The object of the study is the onymic and non-onymic lexemes in the novels “Im Westen nichts Neues” by E. Remarque and “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by E. Hemingway. The subject is the poetic means and techniques of imagery used to implement and recognise the text- and image-forming, plot- and genre-forming role of poetonyms and equivalents of proper names.
The first chapter, “Theoretical and Methodological Foundations for Studying Naming and Namelessness in Literary Texts”, substantiates the methodological foundations of the study and proves the dependence of poetonyms and non-naming nominations from the author`s style, the genre nature of the text, the theme, the character system, the features of the chronotope, the ideological and artistic concept of the work, etc.
The second chapter, “The Poetics of Permanent and Temporary Namelessness in Ernest Hemingway`s “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and E. M. Remarque`s “Im Westen nichts Neues,”” is devoted to the analysis of the permanent anonymity of single-referent and meta-object images, motivated by the active/passive participation of characters in the plot.
In the third chapter, “The Poetics of Names in E. M. Remarque`s Novel “Im Westen nichts Neues,” the phenomenon of naming is examined through the interaction between name↔text. The paradigms of anthroponyms of main, secondary and peripheral characters are analysed, and unique techniques of imagery, connotation and symbolisation within the framework of integrity are described.
The fourth chapter, “The Poetics of Names in E. Hemingway’s novel “For Whom the Bell Tolls” demonstrates the uniqueness of E. Hemingway’s poetic system in terms of the choice, content and functional load of anthroponyms (main and secondary characters), historical and cultural onymic units, and toponyms.
